The Humiliation of Lord George Carnarvon of 1887 : Denied His Coming of Age Celebrations

Shocking and  True Facts  about  George Herbert, 5th                                     Lord Carnarvon   that  Highclere  Don’t Want History to  Record

Why  was  Lord George  Carnarvon  of  Tutankhamun fame   Denied His  Coming  Of Age Celebrations at the age of  21 ?

  The Ultimate  Degradation and

Humiliation of George Herbert in 1887

5th Earl of Carnarvon

Tutankhamun’s co-discoverer George Edward Stanhope Molyneux  Herbert, born 1866,   reached his coming of age   (of 21)   on 26th  June, 1887.  George was  known in 1887 as  Viscount (  Lord ) Porchester,   (‘Porchey’ for short).

As Porchey  was the heir to an English  Earldom with family seats at Highclere Castle, Hampshire and Pixton Park, Devonshire  this should have been an occasion for great rejoicing  with toasts galore  led   by  a proud father,  pats on the back  from the other senior Herbert relations  as well as hearty drinking at a  lavish banquet  with  the  friends of the heir and family along with  hearing   speeches,  florid  testimonies and good cheer from the  family’s tenants to mark  the  heir-in- waiting’s official legal status being reached  and thus  declare him welcome and blessed as the next in line as   the Earl.

                          Highclere after Barry's revamp

Carnarvon  heir not fit for purpose

But   the heir  to the Carnarvon Earldom was not fit for purpose, there were to be no  celebrations, no speeches or cheers,  Porchey was denied by his father  this  customary and   important  single moment in the eternal conventions of  the British aristocracy and land owning classes.

Blatant Lies to explain cancellation celebrations

Porchey’s  big day  was cancelled  -  expunged-   with blatant  lies told of  the event being postponed on account of his father’s ill-health  - or an excuse  that the date clashed with Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.   But  the truth was that Porchey’s coming of age  event was  snubbed –  it was deemed he had brought dishonour upon the Herbert  family name by near bankrupting himself,  and associating with  scoundrels, money lenders, brothel keepers and cheats.

Bretby Park : The seat of the Earls of Chesterfield

On paper Porchey  was  a   wealthly  young man,  having inherited  upon reaching  his majority his late mother’s large legacies   including land and property and  substantial sums of money  from  the Stanhope - Chesterfield family coffers.   The  property portfolio  comprised several estates and  a noble seat  with  coalmines and brickworks   at  Bretby  Park, in Derbyshire . These   inheritances  from  his mother,  Lady Evelyn Stanhope ( who died in 1875)  and from his grandmother, Lady Anne Chesterfield  ( Evelyn’s  mother, who died in 1886 ) gave Porchey financial independence and his own personal control over it all.

                          Porchey's Relationship with His Father

Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon
                                            - Porchey's strict father

The relationship  between Porchey  and his father, Henry Herbert, the 4th Earl of Carnarvon, a prominent Victorian politician ( of Cabinet rank)  was uncomfortable at best,  his straight-faced, economical,  Pater,  ( whose nick name was ‘Twitters’   in part because of a strange,  nervous disposition )  did not approve of his son’s borrowings,  loose morals, bad habits,  and cringed at  rumours and reports of his  offspring  being  frequently  seen disappearing into the seedy depths of the London underworld where his  friends  included  criminals and perverts where Illegal drinking,  male and female prostitution,  bent card schools,   and cock-fighting could be accessed  and where those           ( like Porchey) with money to spend foolishly  congregated  and satisfied their desires,  carnal  needs or  got their  inner thrills.

Besides this  being  how the Carnarvon heir whiled away his time  there was not a race course in England that  had not seen Porchey Carnarvon  wager and invariably  lose  large sums on horses.   He was best known in Society as  a wastrel, a gambler, who pursued excesses  for his own quick pleasures. His maternal grandfather and name sake, George Stanhope, 6th Earl of Chesterfield, who died the year that his grandson was born was a similar squanderer of  the family assets.

                           The  Cleveland Street Homosexual Scandal

Dubbed a never-do-well Porchey had a reputation for being seen  in  the  company of  undesirables  in  houses that  had been visited ( or  at least were being watched)  by the authorities for evidence of  rascality.  This time period  was close enough to make associations of Porchey  through some contemporaries  studying with him  at Cambridge University and  these and other  companions being  on close terms with courtiers in Royal circles and  some of the  titled  people who  were  rumbled   ( or those who escaped from  being ‘outed’ as participants )   in the Cleveland Street homosexual scandal of 1888-9.

Porchey’s Bail Outs by his father

                                          Twitters  Carnarvon

Coming into money  on the promise of  his inheritance  was not safe in Porchey’s head and hands for long, he clocked up vast debts  on the strength of this  expectation of wealth  in the  several years before he became 21. Despite some  bail outs by his father and  warnings that no more help would be given,  Porchey  ignored such threats and continued to   plunge  deeper into debt,  disgrace and debauchery.   He tired of being lectured by his papa – especially when he was reminded  of an obligation, a  burden hanging over from  his late mother’s hope   ( poignantly  expressed on her deathbed and set out in her Will )  that her son when of age  would  recognise his duties as well as his rights.   Whilst Porchey cherished his mother’s memory, he resented the fact that she had left him on his own as she died when he was  aged only  8.

The Carnarvon heir  was   the victim too  of bad genes , he was a frail child,   unloved and unlovable,  bullied ( or ignored ) by his father,  unable to warm to a stepmother, his cousin,   Elsie Howard, and left to be intimidated by an older sister, Winifred,  and reared and regimented by  crazy aunts,  mad uncles,  abusive governesses, servants and private  tutors.

                Porchey’s bad genes and scandals

                                   Porchey's much loved grandmother,
                                            Anne, Lady Chesterfield

As a young adult Porchey  suffered from being sickly with weak lungs and chest and throat disease.  He amassed a dreadful track record  for disobedience  and  for sloppiness in his  learning and education; he was booted out of Eton College :  he was never  a scholar ( like his father ), nor was he   clever enough  for the diplomatic corps or astute enough to study  business,  nor  sturdy  enough bodily  material for to enter the  army or navy  ;  moreover to  crown failing at going to Oxford University and with a mass of  humiliating  periods at crammers in London, the north of England and Germany,  he was at the centre of a   spate of a scandals  for non-payment of creditors bills, poor judgement in  his companions   and for  lax- living  which by  the middle of 1887 resulted in him being told  to pack his bags and leave Cambridge University in shame;  he had only  been able to  get in  there in the first place  because of  his family’s  influence and connections.

The ultimate degradation and humiliation of  Porchey

                      Elsie Howard ( Porchey's stepmother from 1878)
                                                          and the 4th Earl

Since the 4th Earl  was  a  strict disciplinarian it was inevitable that George should suffer this ultimate degradation at the hands of this superior, high-Church,  tight-faced, cheerless,  father.  There was no appeal  or support for George from his stepmother  who  always took her husband’s side,  moreover  this  price paid  by George had to be seen as  their public  punishment together  of a wayward son.  It was also inevitable, that George  would rebel further as he  was  not going  to be put down  by anybody.  Porchey’s arrogance was a  life- long trait he was always someone who took criticism badly and was unwilling to have his  actions or decisions challenged.  Moreover he refused to back down. This  led to  run-ins with his wife, Almina,  from 1895, and disagreements with Howard Carter at the height of Tutankhamun mania.

                                       George Leaves England

George Herbert and his pal, Prince Victor Duleep Singh
.                                       ..more than just friendship....

In 1887, the consequence was that George’s  father and stepmother  lost  any degree of   commitment from  George to  family matters and  he failed to  take any interest  in  his family’s activities,  demands or wishes, except on his terms.  George decided to leave England behind and  travel abroad, seeing the world on board his own yacht, the Aphrodite.  In August 1887 George became a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, at Cowes, IOW.

George’s Wanderings and Death of the 4th Earl of Carnarvon

The period  1887-90 were  George’s wandering  years abroad, in fact it was an imposed exile   - but often in the  company of  his beloved friend Prince Victor Duleep Singh -  who was  more than just a friend. In these years there were just a  few  appearances  with  George’s family  and  this  separation was only ended when  the 4th Earl  seriously  declined in health and he  finally died in 1890.

                           Booting Elsie Out of Highclere

On becoming the 5th Earl of Carnarvon  George Herbert had the satisfaction of  then booting out his stepmother, Elsie from  Highclere Castle.  In any case the Countess was well enough provided for by the 4th Earl’s will with an alternative  roof and maintenance for life.   The 4th Earl did not get his last wish which was to see his eldest son George pre-decease him and  George’s half-brother Hon.  Aubrey Herbert ( one of Elsie’s two sons she bore the 4th Earl )  succeed him as the next Earl of Carnarvon.

NB The  above event of George Herbert  being refused his coming of age celebrations in 1887 - including the  corresponding  record of the period as  seen  in the diaries of the 4th Earl of Carnarvon, is told by William Cross in  detail  ( with supporting sources )  in his book  “ Lordy! Tutankhamun’s Patron As A Young Man” Book Midden Publishing  ( 2012 ).   The entire  narrative will be probed again in  “ Carnarvon, Carter and Tutankhamun Revisited :  The  hidden truths  and doomed relationships  “  a new book from William Cross to be published on 4 November, 2016. This  above article is  a rough draft from the new book which will be sourced with  suitable  End Notes in the final draft.  A photograph of a  revealing nature will also be published in the new book from a private collection representing the decadence of Victorian England showing Porchey in the company of a group of undesirable males. .

William Cross, author of Lordy! Tutankahmun’s  Patron As A Young Man  and  the  biographer of Almina, 5th Countess of Carnarvon as well as sketches of the  4th and 6th Countesses of Carnarvon enlarges his appraisal of the often  topsy- turvey  relationship between  Almina’s  first  husband, George Herbert and  his side- kick  Howard Carter, co-discovers in 1922 of the Tomb of Tutankhamun.  What are the  last remaining untold truths about  their comradeship, the  master-servant   relationship  between the patron and the archeologist,  both lonely, cheerless  figures  with the  tempers of  Nile crocodiles?  What elements of  their  personal stories have been  suppressed?  Why are there still so many anomalies ( read lies )  in the historical account of the time-line of the great discovery of King Tutankhamun that cannot be acknowledged ?

THE 5TH EARL OF CARNARVON FIRST WENT TO EGYPT IN 1889 TO SOW HIS OATS

TUTANKHAMUN CENTENARY 2022

LORD  GEORGE CARNARVON’S CAR SMASH IN GERMANY THAT NEARLY COST HIM HIS LIFE

PART 2 ( OF 3 PARTS)

 HIGHCLERE DENIES THE FACTS

THE 5TH EARL OF CARNARVON FIRST WENT TO EGYPT IN 1889

SOWING HIS OATS IN THE CAIRO WHOREHOUSES
THE LEGACY OF VENEREAL DISEASE

                        Extract  from
“Carnarvon, Carter and Tutankhamun Revisted: The Hidden Truths and Doomed Relationships”
By William Cross

The Carnarvons confuse  fact and fiction
Lord George Carnarvon  first  went to Egypt in 1889

The Herberts of Highclere confuse fact and fiction. They select  what  they  want to place about their kinfolk in the public domain.  They   misrepresent   certain  tales,  romanticize the  facts to  suit and   suppress scandal or  put down any sort of  taint.    With a  world-wide following  - from Downton  Abbey  syndrome-  they naturally  want to be seen in the best of lights,  from a moral perspective,  their pedigree afterall  is notably blue;  so anything improper, with  warts  or  weaknesses  in the character  or make up of any of their kinfolk  get  removed in  playing out the storylines.  Their ancestors  have often been  portrayed with the input of fiction and  so people are hoodwinked to believe the fiction.
Two generations ago the story of Lord George Carnarvon, the  5th Earl of Tutankhamun fame  going to Egypt for the first time  ever in the winter of 1901-2 - after a car accident in Germany-  was misrepresented.  This is because  the accident  did not happen until 1909.
It was further claimed   that  because of the injuries  in 1901 to the Earl’s chest and lungs  he was  in such a state that he could never spend another cold  winter  in England. It was then he turned to Egyptology, to while away the time.
The Legacy of Venereal Disease
However the fact is that George Herbert had been going out to the warm climes of  Egypt ( and other similar warm places)  for two decades before this early 20th Century  period. The  reason for going  there was   to help  him cope  with a congenital  lung condition as well as to try  to find a cure or comfort  for the rot to his body from the legacy of  venereal disease and  his barbaric treatment by medics.
The truth isn’t as nice and neat as the fiction!
The Earl developing an interest in Egyptology- after the accident-  is also swept in  as conjured up in  the same timeline as the car accident –  but the actual  influences that sparked this  turn of events  are  not disclosed.  Those influence requires separate coverage sometime.  Please watch this space for the story.......

George Carnarvon  - too much money and too little sense
Sowing his oats with Prince Victor Duleep Singh                                    in the whore houses of Cairo
George Carnarvon inherited too much money and too little health or  good sense.  Robbed of his mother’s love  when she died when he was just 8 years old, he had a  cold, unfeeling and troubled childhood, his father hated him and not surprisingly George  became a dysfunctional adult.   That  grim story is told in full in the book ( from 2012)    “ Lordy! Tutankhanun’s Patron As A Young Man”, by William Cross.
For the record : George Herbert’s first trip to Egypt  ( when he  was known as Lord Porchester, or ‘Porchey’ for short  )  was in 1889, the  jaunt was part of a  tour of Africa   with his close pal,  Prince Victor Duleep Singh. Victor’s mother’s family were based in Cairo. As   playboys  George and Victor sowed their oats in the whore houses, gambling dens and  hot bath and towel  bars on the banks of the Nile.
George Carnarvon and Prince Victor Duleep Singh
 ‘The Odd Couple’

Featured Above : Prince Victor Duleep Singh ( 1866-1918 )
Whilst abroad the odd couple of the  Earl and  the Prince enjoyed one-2-one privacy on board George’s luxury yacht,  and in England  at  Bretby Park, which at the age of  21,  in 1887, George  inherited as part of his late mother’s lands and property interests in Derbyshire, making him on paper a very wealthy young man. But George could spend money too, and often  not wisely.  Denying George his coming of age celebrations was the punishment  his straight lace father, Henry, the 4th Earl, known as ‘Twitters’,  ( a joyless Victorian  politician and statesman),  inflicted upon his son and heir  for  paying off a string of bad debts.  With two other sons from a second marriage to his cousin  Elsie   Howard, the 4th Earl preferred to see George’s  half- brother Aubrey as his successor.
                                                         History Cheats
Going back to the  date for Carnarvon’s car smash. The history cheats   also say that this single event  led to him taking up Egyptology etc.  Except  ( and it cannot be said often enough)  this was not the date of  the  key motor accident – so it could not be the  reason – nor  was it  the spark  for Carnarnon’s  interest in Egyptology in 1909, not least  since by this date, George Herbert,   the 5th Earl of Carnarvon  had already  met and struck a deal with his archaeologist  colleague   Howard Carter, and  they were some five years into digging their way  around the tombs in Luxor and Thebes. This  further odd coupling  eventually paved the way for these  intrepids - as famous as any of  the  most notable duos from history- to move into The Valley of the Kings, and make their  unique find of 4 November,  1922.

Motor Carnarvon and More  Car Accidents

It has to be said that in the course of  George Carnarvon’s life he  was involved in a number of motor car accidents. Nicknamed ‘ Motor Carnarvon’    he was “ one of the first converts to motoring..” He could be seen “ in the early morning ..rushing through the streets of London all alone and clad entirely in white.”  George bought cars  and rode them on the Continent before bringing them to England.  High speed appealed to George and he was often fined and reprimanded for exceeding the bylaws on speed limits.

TUTANKHAMUN CENTENARY 2022

LORD  GEORGE CARNARVON’S CAR SMASH IN GERMANY THAT NEARLY COST HIM HIS LIFE

PART 1 ( OF 3 PARTS)
WAS THE EARL’S CRASH IN 1901?  OR WAS IT  1909?

WAS THE EVENT MADE TO FIT HISTORY AND CORRUPT IT?
WHAT DAMAGE  HAS BEEN DONE TO HISTORY?

Extract  from
“Carnarvon, Carter and Tutankhamun Revisted: The Hidden Truths and Doomed Relationships”

By William Cross

For  more than  90 years,  smart  Egyptologists,  fussy historians,  Highclere ghost-writers,   distinguished  academics,   investigative  journalists and others have failed to check the accuracy of  the  year for George Herbert’s well known  motor car smash in Germany – a horrific incident  that nearly cost him his life.  George is best known as  Lord George  Carnarvon or the 5th Earl of Carnarvon of Tutankhamun fame.  Without  Lord  George Carnarvon the treasure of Tutankhamun may  not  have emerged. So this accident is noteworthy.
If  the ghost writers of  Highclere  or  any of their  learned, worthy or best selling followers  ever bothered  to check the year of  the accident  by  examining  the news reports of the  event  from  contemporary sources-  like 20th Century  newspapers from Britain and the USA  -  they  would find that  this much quoted  episode  actually took place at the end of  August 1909, not the end of September 1901 or some other date.
Even after pointing out  that the year 1901 is  wrong  it is still recorded in  the  Highclere’s  most recent money-raising  title, in the ‘Real Downton Abbey’ series.  In addition the misinformation continues to be spouted to their Castle visitors.
Deliberate misinformation is a snub on history

Why does it matter? Why indeed?  Well,  it  does!  If the Battle of Hastings was put across by well placed  public figures  as  being in the year 1050  or they said  the Great War began in  1911  it would surely  matter to  challenge?  The same applies to this 1901 claim : It is a  deliberate snub on history and confuses learning for the likes of young people.
Unless we  become a part of  an Orwell’s 1984-world,  history  must be  recorded with accuracy, integrity,  be sourced and  proved.  Hence  the motive for writing  this piece, to demonstrate the misinformation.

Lord Carnarvon and the Tutankhamun Timeline for 2022

The year of Lord George Carnarvon’s accident matters for historical  purposes  in formulating the  timeline for the  life  especially  as the co-discoverer with Howard Carter of the Tomb of the  boy King Tutankhamun  in  Egypt’s Valley of the  Kings in 1922.  George is an important  world figure:  it must be desirable to get his  storyline and  all the connected  dates absolutely  right  and before the high water mark of the Tutankhamun Centenary in 2022.
History successfully corrupted

It will still be a struggle to shift the  sands  that suffocate the truth  or have  anyone   take  further action to  correct  things  because  this is a chronic, endemic,  error  appearing  in   tens of thousands of records, books, journals,  Internet web sites etc  and  the  putrefaction cannot  be changed  at a stroke -  indeed the damage is  already done to history –   history has been successfully  corrupted - the truth beaten by  historical  bunkum  too readily  written,  accepted and  left unchecked.

More Bad history on Lord George Carnarvon

This  bad history  is   not the only  inaccuracy in the story of the life and times of George,  5th Earl of Carnarvon  –   there are a number of  other ( so called ) facts  that have been simply  made to fit  around  this man’s history and supplant his part in  the discovery of the   ‘wonderful things’ from ancient Egypt of 3000-years ago. The truth about his much cited death by an insect bite  at the height of Tutankhamun fame is another affair that needs revision.

The inaccuracy  of the date of the car accident  compounds the bad  history further since this accident  - when stated as  1901 - is  also given as the  REASON  that led to Lord Carnarvon first going out to Egypt  for a  way of easing his injured and diseased lungs in  warmer climes.   The narrative  continues that because of  the Earl’s injuries to his chest  ( from the crash)   he could never spend another winter in England. Curiously, the late  H V Winstone one of  Howard Carter’s biographers,  cites 1903 as the crucial year for the accident and the Earl’s first wintering in Egypt.

Lord George Carnarvon's Motor Accident in Germany 1909

Tutankhamun Centenary -2022

Motor Accident Germany in 1909

Prince Victor Duleep Singh Dashes to save his beloved friend

RE; Tutankhamun Centenary - 2022  : As we move towards the Centenary of the discovery by Howard Carter and Lord George Carnarvon of the precious, priceless Tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt's Valley of the Kings , the Carnarvon- Carter- Tutankhamun timeline  requires revisiting to ensure the historical record has accuracy and integrity.

This note relates to  Lord George  Carnarvon's  motor car accident in Germany from 1909. The year and  date are  incorrectly recorded as  1901  many thousands of times in books, journals and on the Internet .  The motor accident  - that almost cost Carnarvon his life-  did not happen until 1909, by which time he had met Howard Carter  and they had  already  been working together for several years  digging at Thebes.

As the accident was 1909  this often mentioned  event in Germany  could never have been the reason Lord Carnarvon first went to Egypt to explore the tombs.   In fact in Carnarvon's own words it had always been [ his] wish and intention even as far back as 1889  [  the first time  that George - as Lord Porchester - or 'Porchey' as he was known to family and friends  travelled out  to Egypt  ].. to start excavating,,,," in the area.

The extract from The London Times -above- from 28 August 1909 confirms the date as 1909.  In  1889 Carnarvon went to Egypt with his devoted friend  Prince Victor Duleep Singh. As soon as Duleep -  always called  ' Tulip' by Carnarvon -  learned of the serious accident in Germany he left London immediately to dash to the aid of his most beloved friend.    It was Duleep's input - along with Almina, Carnarvon's wife - that saved him - and not for the first time- from the jaws of death.
